What to Expect When Seeking Emergency Shelter

Many emergency shelters in the DFW area operate on a walk-up, first-come basis and may reach capacity quickly. Availability can change daily, and placement is not guaranteed—even after calling ahead.

Families are encouraged to:

  • Arrive early in the day whenever possible

  • Be prepared for wait times or referrals to alternate locations

  • Bring identification and essential documents if available

  • Understand that stays may be short-term or overnight only, depending on capacity

If a shelter is full, staff may provide guidance on other local options.

Applying to Healthy H.E.A.R.T.S. does not replace emergency services or immediate assistance. If you are in crisis or unsafe, please reach out to one of the resources above or call 911.
Healthy H.E.A.R.T.S. shares these resources to support immediate safety and stability while applications are under review and program services continue to develop.
Our team is committed to reviewing each application with care, dignity, and respect. If selected, a Healthy H.E.A.R.T.S. team member will contact you with next steps.
